2026 NSW NPL MENS 1 ROUND 2

WOLLONGONG WOLVES v UNSW FC

WOLVES EARN FIRST VICTORY

The Wollongong Wolves achieved their initial victory of the 2026 campaign  accounting for the newly promoted team, University of NSW FC by two goals to one. UNSW scored the opening goal through former Sydney Olympic player Oliver Puflett and the Wolves overcame this early set back  through the duo of Sebastian Hernandez and Kazuya Yamamura, who scored later for the home team to take the three points and achieve the opening goals for the team in 2026.

Both teams went into this Round 2 match with  defeats. The Wolves lost to St. George by three goals to nil with UNSW being defeated by Sydney United 5-2. Both teams looked to open their account in this fixture.

The Wolves ran towards the southern end as UNSW kicked off.

UNSW drew first blood  when the Wolves unfortunately gave away the ball to a lurking Jack Fulton. He spied Puflett making an incisive run and projected a pinpoint high ball to him.  Puflett gained control on the six-yard line and tucked the ball  with his left foot past the on-rushing Wollongong custodian Daniel Solsky. This emanated on seven minutes.

Hernandez looked to sweep the ball in on target in reply  but alas, took a deflection. After receiving a pass from Alex Masciovecchio.  Flynn Madden’s subsequent corner kick brought no joy.

On eleven minutes, Hernandez  plied the ball in from the left and Yamamura’s targeted header was kept out by the UNSW experienced custodian and former Blacktown City player, Tristan Prendergast.

Eleven minutes on, Jyden Harb received a pass as Puflett stretched his leg to project the ball to Harb. From close vicinity to the left of goal,  Harb was looking to increase his tally after scoring in the previous round. However, the outcome was not what he desired.

Meanwhile, the Wolves had some good combinations that were being used effectively as the team searched  for a way back into the match. UNSW were defending stoutly, however, with Greg Lynch and Claudio Fabiano coping with the Wolves attacks and when the opportunity arose broke upfield .

In the thirty-seventh minute, Anthony  Barbic placed  his effort from outside the box over the goal in attempt to increase his team’s score.

Foty-one minutes in,  Madden passed through a sea of legs to Beattie, and he put his effort wide. Russell and Yamamura were involved prior. A couple of minutes later, the Wolves gained the equaliser and first strike of the season. A Sebastian Duarte throw- in on the left side found Lachlan Scott. With a defender being in attendance, Scott held him off and lifted the ball to Masciovecchio. He in turn threaded to Hernandez,  who was positioned to his right. His immediate right footed shot zoomed in near the custodian’s left post beating Prendergast on the ball’s trajectory. This was his ninth Mens 1 goal with his goal per ratio being 18.75%.

At half time it was level pegging with each team was still in the hunt for an initial victory.

As the second half progressed each team was looking to achieve the winning goal with vigour and persistence.

Puflett passed to Fulton and with the outside of his right foot, hot a low shot which Solsky was able to take with facile accomplishment.

At the opposite end, Masciovecchio intercepted a pass and rampaged forward, but the outcome did not come up to expectations. Hernandez made a groundbreaking run forward in the fifty-first minute, going past a defender with speed. Alas , this enterprise did deserve something  but in the end came to nothing.

A Masciovecchio effort was blocked by Wood as the Wolves attacked ten minutes into the second half.

Later in proceedings, in the sixty-sixth minute to be exact, a Lopes header was glanced away from the target  as UNSW provided another attacking foray.

However, two minutes later the home side gained the advantage when Japanese midfielder, Yamamura goaled with a tidy finish. Prior, Madden lifted the ball from his own half upfield and out to the right for Scott with plenty of space in front of him. He moved forward before centring the ball to Yamamura who did the rest, calmly and assuredly. This was his initial goal in this Premier League competition, though he had scored one goal previously. This was a wonder goal from near hallway in the Australian Championships versus South Hobart in Tasmania.

In the latter part of the second half, UNSW had much of the attacking action and a great deal of possession with the Wolves’ defence holding firm. Solsky came off his line to deny on seventy-one minutes and scant time later thwarted UNSW once again. Banri Kanaizumi cleared  in succession as UNSW pressed. Nathan Roberts was playing in a few dangerous crosses to assist in his team scoring but it was all in vain.

Wolves’ substitute Dylan King produced a fine header on target in time added on. However, Prendergast was to the fore and saved.

The Wolves had done what was needed to garner the victory and the three points with the resilient come back after conceding early. UNSW showed that they are a team to be reckoned with.
