WOLLONGONG WOLVES CLUB UPDATE

Following the recent announcement regarding the South Coast Flame Youth and NPL programs, the Wollongong Wolves have been humbled by the number of players, coaches and families who have contacted the club seeking guidance on the opportunities that may be available and expressing an interest in becoming a part of our Club.

Like many within the football community, the Wollongong Wolves became aware of these developments only following the recent announcement. Since then, the Club has been working diligently to understand the implications, engage with the relevant stakeholders and assess how we can best support players, coaches and families.

Our vision remains unchanged; to see as many locally developed players as possible progress through our regional pathways and ultimately represent the Wollongong Wolves at senior level. Strong community clubs, quality development programs and connected regional pathways all play an essential role in achieving that vision.

As part of our normal planning for the 2027 season, the Wollongong Wolves have already commenced our player retention and recruitment process for our Boys Youth League and Men’s NPL programs. While we will do our utmost to consider every enquiry we receive, we ask for your patience as we work through this process carefully, fairly and respectfully.

We would also like to acknowledge the vital role played by local clubs throughout the Illawarra and South Coast. These clubs are the foundation of football in our region, providing thousands of players with their first experiences in the game while developing players, coaches, referees and volunteers.

The establishment of a Girls Youth League and Women’s NPL program has always formed part of the Wollongong Wolves long-term strategic vision. As we continue our ambition of competing in the Australian Championship, the National Second Division and ultimately fielding both Men’s and Women’s A-League teams representing Wollongong and the South Coast, it is essential to provide an elite pathway for both male and female footballers.

The Wollongong Wolves have now formally expressed to Football NSW our interest in continuing the GJDL, Girls Youth League and Women’s NPL programs under the Wollongong Wolves banner. We also sought clarification from Football NSW regarding whether the Club could assume the South Coast Flame Boys Youth League and Men’s NPL licence. Football NSW has advised that, under the current competition structure, the Wollongong Wolves cannot hold a second male licence.

We believe it is important that a timely decision is made to provide certainty for players, coaches and families, and to preserve the strong female football program that has been developed through the South Coast Flame. Our goal would be to build upon the strong foundations already established within women’s football in our region, providing consistency for players, coaches and families whilst creating a connected pathway into senior football and, we hope, delivering a seamless transition.

The Wollongong Wolves have held informal discussions with Football South Coast, Football NSW and the Illawarra Stingrays, expressing our commitment to working collaboratively to strengthen player pathways and create more opportunities for footballers across the Illawarra and South Coast.

Regardless of the outcome, the Wollongong Wolves remain committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure football in the region continues to thrive.
