2026 NSW NPL MENS 1 ROUND 6
WOLLONGONG WOLVES v SPIRIT FC
WOLVES AND SPIRIT SCORELESS
Â
Wollongong Wolves and NWS Spirit both drew blanks in the scoring department in this Round Six skirmish at Macedonia Park. Spirit had a gilt-edged opportunity to score from the spot to win the match late in proceedings but could not convert. Conversely, the Wolves went closest when a header shaved the cross bar. This game was a case of a point earned, but two points spurned. This was the Wolves’ sixty-fifth 0-0 draw in the Wolves’ history and a sixth season in succession for such a result.
With a stiff breeze blowing down the pitch (towards the southern end) with sunny skies, the Wolves kicked off, running towards the southern end with the wind at their backs. The Wolves maintained early possession spreading the ball with precision around with a host of players participating. When the Spirit finally got the ball in these early minutes, a ball from Finn Ballard-McBride searched for a teammate but the Wolves’ Sebastian Duarte was first to the ball to deter this attacking manoeuvres. Ballard-McBride a scant time later, charged into the penalty area only for Banri Kanaizumi to halt his progress with a well-timed tackle. Lachlan Scott later won the ball off Zayne Ahluwalia,  before passing to Marcus Beatty,  with a corner kick emanating for their trouble. From Flynn’ Madden’s enticing corner kick, Felipe D’Agostini despatched the ball over the bar with a strong effort.
The Wolves were strong in the first period of the first and Spirit gradually upped their momentum. Yoshida’s effort at the twentieth minute mark, was headed away by Duarte who was playing impressively. Yoshida was hampered as he attempted to burst through. The Spirit’s Andre Takami, who made twenty-six appearances for the Wolves in 2024,  took a free kick that torpedoed narrowly wide of custodian, Daniel Solsky’s right post. Later,  Lowe flicked the ball off Yoshida to earn a corner kick. However, this brought no joy.
The Wolves were well committed with strong defence, enterprising midfielders (with Madden being super effective) and a determined front row but no goals came to fruition.  Spirit, on the hand were equally attacking but as well could not breach the Wolves’ domain.
At half time, it was a scoreless even Stevens situation.
In the second half, the Spirit attacked from the outset. Takami shot wide from outside the box and the dangerous Yoshida hit the side netting. Yoshida has scored two goals this 2026 campaign so far and was eager to add to his tally. A corner kick by Takami was headed out by Kanaizumi.
A Hernandez cross was seized upon by Alex Masciovecchio, but his header was projected straight the Marques. Not to be outdone, Takami’s effort traversed wide from his position outside of the penalty area.
A few minutes after the hour, Ryan Lowe who was starting in this match, managed a header from a Madden corner kick. It flashed narrowly wide. Hernandez struck his effort straight at Marques in a following play.
The Spirit were clear of the defence near the seventieth minute with the goal in their sights. However, Kanaizumi managed a great tackle to dispossess the ball carrier strongly and effectively to scupper this attacking foray.
The Wolves went ever so close to scoring when a Beattie header from close proximity, grazed the cross bar. It just was not to be.
Yoshida was put through and he found himself one on one with Solsky with the custodian ultimately winning out. Riku Kobayashi later put his effort skyward
At the opposite end the Wolves were still looking for an opener . However, Duarte’s shot went high.
Chances galore for both teams but nary a clinical finish.
In time added on, a controversial penalty kick was given to Spirit. Solsky looked as though he got the ball cleanly from substitute Thomas Mason, who fell afterwards. This was a the chance to score that the Spirit were waiting for. Takami was the designated penalty taker. He sized up the target and he hit the ball. However, he hooked his effort to the left of Solsky’s right post. The Wolves were relieved.
The match concluded with all things being equal. The Wolves now occupy tenth position while Spirit are in sixth position.
Luke Wilkshire – ‘I thought the performance was good. We played good football and we created some good moments but if you don’t score you don’t win. The attitude and the quality of the play, we controlled the ball well. It was just without the rewards.’
Impressive Flynn Madden – ‘We had the chances to take it away but unfortunately the ball did not go into the net…. It looked like a soft penalty… Definitely a different role as a number 6… I try to get up as much as possible. It is part of my game.’ On his great game. ‘Thanks. I appreciate it.’
