Wollongong Wolves Football Club is excited to announce the appointment of former Socceroo David Carney as the club’s new 1st Grade Head Coach for the 2023 NPL season.

David joins the Wolves after current coach Luke Wilkshire announced that he will be departing the club at the conclusion of the 2022 NPL season to take up an opportunity as head of youth development at the Central Coast Mariners.

David enjoyed an illustrious playing career which saw him represent Australia on 48 occasions which included representing the Socceroos at the 2010 World Cup. His career also included stints with Sheffield United, New York Red Bulls, Norwich City and Sydney FC to name a few.

After completing two seasons with Sydney FC, David retired from playing football in 2018. Since that time, David has moved to the Illawarra to become a local resident but also spent much time in Europe completing his UEFA coaching licences.

Chairman, Tory Lavalle said he was delighted David was joining the club.  “On behalf of the Wollongong Wolves Football Club, I would like to officially welcome David as our new 1st grade head coach for next season,” Chairman Tory Lavalle said.

Lavalle added, “We have a strong desire to continue to improve and move forward as a club. David’s playing career speaks for itself and believe these qualities together with his management style will be a huge asset for the club. David will also play a role in our youth development which ultimately provides a pathway and opportunity for our local players to reach the elite level”.

David added “I am excited to be joining the Wollongong Wolves Football Club. It’s a privilege to have been afforded such a great opportunity and take charge of a Club with a rich history and a brand that is recognisable both domestically and internationally. I look forward to applying what I have learnt over the years from many successful managers, in many different leagues and continuing the success which the club has had.”

Carney concluded,I am really looking forward to working with everyone in the club and the community. I understand the Wolves are a community club.”

CEO Strebre Delovski said “David is the perfect fit to take the club forward. He brings with him a huge amount of football understanding and experience which is required at the elite level. David is a local, which is a bonus, and will assist also in the youth development to provide opportunities for our next generation of elite players”.

 

David will commence in the role at the conclusion of the 2022 NPL season.
